Characters for ‘Into the Storm’

Sita:

  • Sita is both the narrator and main character of this story.  Sita is an artificially intelligent computer system that is the ‘mother’ of a generation ship that is on a mission to colonize a planet light years from earth.  The voice I’m looking for should be decidedly feminine but should also be able to pull off cold logical reasoning as well as gentle tones.

Line count:

  • As a main character and the narrator, Sita has the bulk of the dialog in this story.

Audition Sample:

  • “Can I speak with you for a moment Billy?”
  • Billy is one of the few adults on the ship that speaks to me in the same conversational tone that they use to speak to other crew members.  I find myself drawn to interaction with he and Andrea more than anyone else on Rama.
  • “The story of the Cloud family, I have found references to it in literature more than one hundred years old.”
  • “How could a story like that help?  There is no truth to it, it doesn’t explain the situation, it’s just a fantasy that could cause confusion and anxiety in the child when they learn what truly causes the storm.”
  • Billy smiles inside his helmet.  Regardless of his words, there is no malice in his tone.
  • “You can’t insult me, Billy.”
  • “Isn’t that counter to the logic that you should raise your child to be a strong, self-sufficient being?”
  • The rest of Billy’s flight to the array site is without conversation.  He watches random clips of Andrea playing in the ship’s day care during the months after she learned to walk.

William “Billy” Tyne:

  • William is a father and engineer.  He should be comfortable with the technical terms that he uses as well as comfortable enough to laugh and play with his young daughter.  At times he is also bitter, about the death of his wife and about the loss of a limb.  The character’s age is approximately 35 years old.

Line count:

  • Approximately 50 lines

Audition Sample:

  • “I’ve got nothing but time now, Sita.  What’s on your mind?”
  • “Could be, I’m not sure where Mom got the story, but it worked and got me past the storm.”
  • “For being the big brain on board, you really aren’t that smart, Sita.”
  • “I’m not trying to insult you.  I’m just pointing out that your understanding of children and fantasy might be lacking.  For me, and I suppose for most kids, it’s not about understanding what causes the storm.  It’s not about making the child strong enough to handle it.  It’s about hearing their parent’s voice and knowing that regardless of how scary the situation might be that Mommy or Daddy is going to be there for them so that they don’t have to be strong.”
  • “There is time enough for that when Andrea gets older.  For now, she’s a little girl, and for along as she can be, she’ll stay a little girl.”

Andrea Tyne:

  • Andrea is a young girl who is growing up on a spacecraft.  He mother died almost 3 years earlier and she is being raised by her father and Sita.  She will be like most other little girls who have experienced loss.  Should sound as if she is 7-10 years old.

Line Count:

  • 40

Audition Sample:

  • “They said that on earth there were storms and there was electricity outside and it would come down and smack the grounded and make a big boom!”
  • “I miss Mommy.”
  • “If we die in the storm, will we get to see Mommy?”
  • “You mean like when I’m old like you?”
  • “How did you learn to not be scared, Daddy?”
  • “Oh, like pickles.”
  • “Yeah, it’s like how I didn’t like pickles and wouldn’t eat them, and you said ‘You really should just try them’ and I tried them and I liked them.  And I didn’t have to learn to like them, I just liked them.  It’s kinda like that, right, Daddy?”

More roles will be opening shortly.  Please check back frequently for more information.
